Autism Acceptance Week

Autism Acceptance Week

AUTISM ISN’T A CHOICE. ACCEPTANCE IS.

Autism acceptance is a movement that aims to promote understanding and acceptance of autism as a natural and valid variation of the human experience. This movement is driven by the idea that autism is not a disease or a disorder, but rather a neurological difference that should be respected and celebrated.

Up until just last year (2022) it was known as ‘Autism Awareness Week’. However thanks to many Autistic folk speaking out, it was recognised that the word ‘awareness’ doesn’t encapsulate what Autistic people really need.

Autism acceptance advocates believe that society should focus on accommodating and supporting the needs of autistic individuals rather than trying to cure, at worst, or normalise them. They argue that autistic individuals should be accepted for who they are, and that society should strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment that allows them to thrive.

The autism acceptance movement also aims to challenge stereotypes and stigmas surrounding autism. This includes challenging harmful attitudes that portray autistic individuals as lacking empathy, intelligence, or social skills. Instead, the movement seeks to promote a more accurate and positive understanding of autism that recognises the strengths and unique qualities of autistic individuals.

Overall, the goal of autism acceptance is to create a more inclusive and accepting society that celebrates neurodiversity and promotes the well-being of all individuals, regardless of their neurological differences.

♾️World Autism Acceptance Week ♾️

Words have power 💥

I know some Autistics don’t really like the word ‘acceptance’ and I’m definitely on the fence.

It’s much better than Awareness because lots of people are ‘aware’ of autism but is ‘acceptance’ the right word?
Let me know what you think below 👇🏻

I’ve put together a few images to show and share with your friends and family in the hope that we can all learn together and listen to Autistic folks and support each other’s journeys.

So, egos at the door please and listening ears open so we can talk it through 💜
